Freeland set to make NBA debut

Tuesday, 30-Oct-2012

The 2012-13 NBA season tips off Tuesday with the NBA Champion Miami Heat amongst the teams in action on opening night.

The Heat, who will receive their championship rings in a pre-game ceremony, will face Eastern Conference rivals the Boston Celtics while Great Britain international Joel Freeland (pictured left, top) is set to make his NBA debut Wednesday night when his Portland Trail Blazers host the star-studded Los Angeles Lakers.

Born in Farnham, Surrey, the 25-year old power forward/centre was drafted by the Trail Blazers in 2006 and had successful stints in CB Gran Canaria and Unicaja Malaga in Spain’s ACB league before making his move to the USA this summer.

GB teammate Luol Deng will also make his season bow on Wednesday when the Chicago Bulls host the Sacramento Kings.

UK fans will have the chance to see the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons face off as part of 'NBA London Live 2013' on January 17 at The O2 in the NBA's third regular-season game in Europe. The Pistons play their season-opener at home against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

The Knicks meanwhile have to wait until Thursday to tip-off their season when they play the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets, part owned by Jay-Z, made their long-anticipated move to Brooklyn during the summer. The match-up with cross-town rivals New York will be the first NBA regular-season game in the new Barclays Center, tipping off the battle of the boroughs.
