Women's National Cup round-up: Favoured teams progress
Tuesday, 30-Oct-2012
The line up for the Women's National Cup quarter finals is complete after last weekend's second round fixtures.
Last season's Cup finalists and Division 1 winners Cardiff Archers were given a scare by Division 2 Bristol Storm before escaping with a 57-50 victory. It took a 14-9 fourth quarter for Archers to come away with the win after they led by just two points after three quarters.
Cup holders Sheffield Hatters comfortbaly made the quarter finals with an 87-69 win at Leeds Carnegie. Hatters had 24 points from Olympian Julie Page and 23 from Steph Gandy as they took control of the game in the middle two quarters, winning them by a combined score of 42-26.
Hatters opponents in the last eight will be Division 2 Northamptonshire Titans, who defeated fellow Division 2 outfit Reading Rockets 60-57 after holding them to just 16 points in the first half.
Newham Stars and Barking Abbey played out an intense double overtime game with Barking Abbey eventually succeeding 84-78. Stars held Barking to just 10 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but were outscored 11-5 in the second extra period.
The other two second round ties saw comfortable wins for Loughborough Students Riders (62-40 over Manchester Mystics) and Sevenoaks Suns (74-34 over Solent Suns) to round out the quarter final line-up.
