Women's National Cup preview: Top teams enter the fray

Friday, 26-Oct-2012

The tie of the second round of the Women's National Cup sees holders Sheffield Hatters travel to fellow Division 1 team Leeds Carnegie. Unsurprisingly, given theat Carnegie finished 2-19 last season, Hatters won all three league match-ups between the sides last season and topped 100 points each time.

The other two all-Division 1 clashes see Newham Stars facing Barking Abbey and Loughborough Students Riders hosting Manchester Mystics.

Riders and Mystics met twice last season when both teams were in Division 2. Mystics won the Trophy final against Riders 66-60, but Loughborough gianed their revenge by knocking Mystics out of the Division 2 Playoffs at the semi final stage with a 77-76 overtime victory.

There will be a minimum of one Division 2 team in the quarter final line-up as Reading Rockets and Northamptonshire Titans clash at Rivermead for a chance at a quarter final spot against Leeds or Sheffield.

With the Women's season only just beginning the top division teams who will have to take extra care to avoid an upset are Cardiff Archers and Sevenoaks Suns, who host Bristol Storm and Solent Suns respectively.
