Paralympics Day 2: GB lose twice
Saturday, 01-Sep-2012
Day two of Wheelchair Basketball action at the 2012 Paralympic Games saw Team GB lose twice to fellow Commonwealth countries.
Great Britain’s Women played Australia at 1pm at North Greenwich Arena and were beaten quite comfortably,
51-24.
Australia held GB to a mere 14 points over the first three quarters and by that time they were winning 39-14. GB managed 10 points in the final period but Australia had it wrapped up by then and coasted in for their second win of the tournament.
Amber Merritt led Australia with 10 points and she also had 6 rebounds. Judith Hamer was Britain’s top scorer with 8 points.
GB’s Women play Brazil on Saturday.
The British Men played the final game Friday at the North Greenwich Arena and although they had a solid first half against Canada, they had no answer for Patrick Anderson who finished with a triple-double (29 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists), as his side won
70-54.
Canada led 20-9 at the end of 10 minutes but GB fought back before halftime to trail 34-29 heading into the break.
A poor third quarter hurt GB as Canada held them scoreless for nearly five minutes while stringing together an 8-0 run. By the end of three Canada were up by sixteen and despite the two teams splitting the final 36 points, the margin stayed the same by the end of the game.
Gaz Choudry led GB with 11 points (all in the final minutes) as coach Murray Treseder and the British await Colombia on Saturday.
