U20 Women lose to Slovak Republic, last chance to stay in Div A
Saturday, 18-Aug-2012
Great Britain’s U20 Women are left with a fight to stay in Division A after a
74-61 loss against Slovak Republic on Saturday has placed them in the relegation round of the European Championship.
The Slovaks led from tip to final buzzer but as GB have proven in both their games so far, they never go down without a fight.
Cheridene Green converted on the and-one play midway through the fourth quarter to bring her British team within four points (61-57), forcing a Slovak timeout. Unfortunately for coach Frans Griffioen and the British team, the timeout from Slovak Republic led to GB being held scoreless for nearly the entire remainder of the game. It was nearly five minutes before Britain scored again and Slovakia’s late 13-4 run saw the game out.
Femi Hamilton led GB with 17 points in a game where they were timid to shoot from outside, taking only three shots from beyond the arc, connecting on one of those.
Great Britain now join the other three teams who finish bottom of their groups in a four team pool with only the top side staying safe in Division A. The bottom three will be relegated to Division B.
