U20 Women unable to hold off Serbia, lose second straight
Friday, 17-Aug-2012
Great Britain’s U20 Women slipped to a second straight defeat in the European Championship (Division A) in Hungary, but in the end Serbia were too much and won the game on Friday
71-59.
A stubborn British side wouldn’t let Serbia out of their sights in Debrecen and when UWIC Archers guard Francesca Whitby dropped a three a minute into the fourth quarter, the game was tied at 50.
However, the Serbs went on a 21-9 run to see out the final period and came out with back-to-back wins in the tournament, putting them top of Group D.
Centre Jess Hurd out of Nottingham had a great game for GB with a game-high 25 points (10/13 shooting) and she also grabbed 9 boards in a losing effort. Scottish national Erin McGarrachan was the only other Brit in double figures scoring with 14 points.
Snezana Colic had 24 points to lead the way for Serbia.
Great Britain now need to win Saturday’s final group game against the Slovak Republic if they want to stay clear of the relegation zone.
