USA sealed top spot in Group A as they made five wins from five with a high-scoring 114-66 victory against China. The result saw China slip down to third spot and stay in America’s half of the draw.
Diana Taurasi led the way with 22 points for an American side who had all 12 players on the scoresheet, with six getting in double figures, and they set a tournament record 33 assists. The competition’s leading scorer, Nan Chen, again led China with 16 points as he side were out-rebounded 46-30.
France joined USA as the only other team to go into the knockout stage with a 65-54 win against Russia.
The French blew the game open in the third period, starting on a 12-2 run that gave them a 35-23 lead when Celine Dumerc - whose dramatic last-second triple broke GB’s hearts on Friday - hit from outside again.
Dumerc led France with 12 points, while Evgeniya Belyakova had 14 for Russia who finished third in the group.
Australia survived a strong second half comeback from Canada to wrap up a 72-63 victory in game three.
The Czech Republic wrapped up their pool games with an 82-57 hammering of Angola, outscoring the African side by at least five in each period to finish with a 3-2 record.
All 12 of the Czech roster got on the scoresheet, led by 20 points from Michaela Zrustova and 19 from Eva Viteckova. Nacissel Mauricio led Angola with 18 points and six boards.
Game five saw a “dead rubber” as Turkey – already assured second place – faced Olympic debutants Croatia who finished fifth, with the Turks running out 70-65 winners
Lelas led the Croat scoring with 14, Holingsworth adding the same number to lead the Turks.
