Monday, 06-Aug-2012
England’s U18 Women had to settle for the silver medal on Sunday in the European Championship (Division B) final after going down to Belarus,
76-74.
Their tournament performance still earns them promotion to Division A next year, however, as coach Len Busch and his squad can take pride in a 5-2 overall record. Shequila Joseph was also selected to the All-Tournament team for the 2012 European
Championship thanks to a 15.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game average.
England led for the majority of the game on Sunday, at one point holding a double digit advantage, but when Belarus’ Maryia Papova’s bucket gave them a 68-67 lead midway through the fourth they never looked back.
They did have their chances to tie the game in the final minute, though, as Joseph’s lay-up was blocked out of bounds and England’s resulting possession saw her miss a hook shot inside. England were then forced to foul being own by two points.
Joseph led all scorers with 22 points while Cheridene Green had yet another double-double with 14 points and 14 boards. Green averaged a double-double for the duration of the European Championship.
