Serbia loss puts U16 Women on brink of relegation

Monday, 16-Jul-2012

England's U16 Women are on the brink of relegation back to Division B after a 71-39 defeat at the hands of Serbia on Monday.

With only one team of their 13th-16th playoff group remaining in Division A for next season, the England team have it all to do in their remaining five games if they are to avoid returning to Division B after gaining promotion last season.

Monday's game proved to be a similar story to previous games as poor shooting (less than 25%) and rebounding (Serbia had more offensive rebounds than England had defensive rebounds) left England with a hole that they could not climb out of.

After a tense early period Serbia produced an 11-2 run to move into a double-digit lead and a 13-1 run at the start of the second quarter had them up 35-10.

Despite trailing 46-19 at half-time the England girls stuck to their task and proved competitive in the second half as they held Serbia to just 25 points.

Shanice Norton was impressive for England with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Their next game is on Tuesday against Turkey, who defeated Germany in their opening relegation group game.
