GB U20 Men stay perfect with win over Denmark

Saturday, 14-Jul-2012

Finishing top of Group C looks a certainty for Great Britain's U20 Men after they defeated Denmark on Saturday, 71-60, in game three of the European Championship (Division B) first round.

They now face a winless Belarus on Sunday to complete a perfect first round.

Devon van Oostrum (18), Alasdair Fraser (17) and Louis Sayers (13) combined for 48 GB points in a game that was a battle from beginning to end.

The Danes made a big move toward the end of the first half when their 10-0 run with a minute and a half remaining sent the two teams into the break separated by two points; Great Britain led 34-32.

The surge continued for Denmark at the start of the third, and they led 42-36 midway through the period, but GB struck back. With two minutes remaining, van Oostrum hit a pair of free throws making it 45-44 to Britain and he closed the quarter out with five more points giving his side a lead they wouldn't lose.

Josh Owen-Thomas hit a three a minute into quarter four, giving GB a 9-point lead, and coach David Smart's side hung on for the 11-point victory despite Denmark getting as close as five points back.

The British free throw shooting was outstanding (24/28, 86%) led by van Oostrum's 11 of 12 tally. Denmark struggled from the line going 10 from 23 and they only shot 4 of 20 from outside the arc.
