GB Women to learn finalised Olympic schedule

Thursday, 21-Jun-2012

When the Standard Life GB Women next take to the court in their pre-Olympic preparation, the details of their full schedule in the group stage will have been filled in thanks to the upcoming Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Turkey.

Whilst the GB Women have a short break after returning from Prague before they face Angola, Australia and France in Sheffield, the tournament in Turkey wil be completed between June 25 and July 1 to decide the final 5 teams to make up the Olympic tournament.

Twelve teams will gather in Turkey, having been drawn into four groups of three. They will each play two group games and the top two teams in each group (likely to be any team that wins at least one game) will progress to the quarter finals.

The tournament will progress slightly uniquely from that point given that there is no requirement to produce a winner. All four winners of the quarter finals will be immediately celebrating a spot in the Olympic games and will take no further part in the qualifying tournament.

The four quarter final losers will then battle it out in semi finals and a final to allocate the final qualification spot, with the final all-important game on July 1.

Upon completion of the tournament the qualifying teams will be drawn into spots in the group stage of the Olympic competition, with GB waiting to find out the identity of two of their group opponents.

A number of the teams in the tournament have used games against Great Britain as preparation for the event, with all but two of GB's 11 games so far having been against teams that are in Turkey attempting to qualify for the Olympics.

All of the action will be available to watch on FIBATV.com - although a subscription will be required. The results and standings can be followed at london2012.fiba.com.
