Flyers route to Cup final reviewed

With Bristol Academy Flyers' home court being refurbished, they were the last team to take to the floor in this season's National Cup - but they certainly made up for lost time with a 90-61 hammering of Plymouth Marjon.

Plymouth took an early 20-12 lead halfway through the first period but a three-pointer by Mike Gregory at the end of the first period gave the Flyers the lead 25-24. The home side never looked back as it expanded its lead to 12 by half-time and continued to dominate the game as an impressive 29-11 third period secured their place in the third round of the National Cup.

Douglas McLaughlin-Williams led the Flyers with 22 while Gregory finished on 20

Neighbours Taunton Tigers were the visitors to Filton College in the third round and Flyers edged a thriller 81-79. McLaughlin-Williams again led with 20 points as Flyers survived a second half comeback from the Tigers. The home side led 32-22 at the first break and appeared to have the game sewn up at 58-34 going into the locker room at half-time.

However, a 20-10 third period put Tigers back into the game, but despite outscoring home side 25-13 in the final stanza they were unable to take the victory. Greg Streete added 15 and Robert Loftman 14 for Flyers.

Their reward was a trip to holders Reading Rockets in the last eight and another tight game saw them reach the final four with an 84-80 victory.

American forward McLaughlin-Williams proved to be the difference yet again, finishing with 22 points, nine assists and three steals. He was one of four Flyers in double figures, with Greg Streete adding 17, Robert Loftman 16 and Davis Bowne 14.

Andreas Kapoulas' team looked to be heading out of the competition as they entered the fourth period 64-55 down, but Bristol shot out of the blocks going on an 11-2 run, with treys from Loftman and McLaughlin-Williams helping to level the scores at 66. Each team scored on their next pair of offences before Bristol nudged five points ahead with a Tony Berry basket followed by a McLaughlin-Williams three.

Robbie Parker hit a huge shot from long range with five seconds left to pull Reading within two points (82-80), but Adam Thoseby was forced to foul Streete and the Bristol guard sealed the win with a pair of free throws.

The Flyers were drawn at home against old rivals Derby Trailblazers in the semi-final and a strong fourth period proved crucial as they reached the title game with an 83-76 victory.

Greg Streete led the Flyers with 23 points, with Doug McLaughlin-Williams adding 20 and Arek Makowski 11.

The teams shared 30 first period points before Bristol edged ahead 40-38 at half-time. That lead was halved to 58-57 at the final break, but they closed out the victory with a 25-19 fourth quarter.
