Karen Burton has named the initial U16 Women squad for 2011. The squad is a mixture of returnees from the 2010 programme and additions from the 2010 U15 development squad and recommendations from a selection panel who attended the 2010 U15 Inter-regional tournament.

The squad will assemble for the first camp in Bristol in the mid-term break. Head coach Karen Burton will kick off a programme aimed at building on the successful 4th placing at the 2010 European Championship.

"We made good progress at U16 level last year, however the quest for division A status is a difficult road for our national teams" stated Warwick Cann. "With a large group of last year's squad coming back, plus graduates out of our U15 development squad we have a good group to work with.We also identified good talent at the Inter-regional tournament earlier in the year."

U16 WOMEN FINISH 4TH AT EUROPEANS - (23/08/2010)

England U16 Women came one win away from promotion to Division A, but eventually had to settle for 4th at the recently completed FIBA Europe U16 European Championship Division B.

Wins over Macedonia and Romania saw them into the second stage despite a 23 point loss to eventual finalists Slovakia. A 2 point loss to Israel seemed to have dealt their hopes of getting an easier quarter final a fatal blow, but they recovered to beat previously unbeaten Germany by 4 the next day and followed that with a comfortable victory against Ireland.

In the quarters, they faced Bulgaria and went on to win 62-58. With a place in Division A on the line they lost the semi-final to eventual winner Hungary 65-50 and were then consigned to 4th place with a 26 point loss to Portugal.

Shequila Joseph was England's top scorer, with 13.8 points per game, but the scoring was spread around during the tournament. Janice Monakana (9.1 points, 7.7 rebounds) and Cheridene Green (8.8 points, 8.4 rebounds) came close to averaging double-doubles.

U16 WOMEN TWO IN DUBLIN - (12/07/2010)

England's Under 16 Women returned from Ireland with a pair of victories over the weekend.

On Saturday they hammered the Irish Under 16 development side 81-44 before beating the hosts European Championship team 84-66 the following the day.

In the first game a 44-26 half-time lead was extended to 63-34 going into the final break after holding the hosts to just eight points in third period. An 18-10 fourth period wrapped things up and coach Karen Burton was pleased with her team's balanced attack with 11 players on the scoresheet and three of those in double figures.

Janice Monakana led the way with 17 points, while Jayanne Bravo-Harriot added 11 and Shequila Joseph ten. Chantelle Charles added five points and eight assists.

The following day saw England playing in front of a large and vocal crowd, which will probably be similar to what they will face when they play in Macedonia at the 2010 European Championship.

It was a two point game after the first quarter (21-19) and England again outscored their hosts by two in the second period to lead 42-38 at the half. The visitors withstood a couple of third quarter runs by the Irish girls before going on a run of their own to close out the 84-66 win.

Four of the England girls finished in double figures led by Leah McDerment with 23. Cheridene Green  finished with 16, with Joseph adding 13 and Osaro Otobo 11.

England have two days of practice next weekend before leaving for a training camp in Bulgaria at the end of the month and then onto Macedonia for the European Championship.

Coach Burton was pleased with the teams' play over the weekend and is looking forward to continued progress in the coming weeks.

U16 WOMEN WIN THREE GAMES IN FRANCE - (27/05/2010)

England's U16 Women's squad recently returned from the Salies du Salat tournament in France, where they played 5 games over 3 days, returning with 3 wins and a third placed finish.

Head Coach Karen Burton commented: "Although certain players were unavailable due to exams I thought this was a good tournament as preparation towards the European Championships in Macedonia later in the summer. It highlighted certain things we need to work on, and some players exceeded my expectations. At times there were occasions when we needed to step up but to finish third losing to the eventual winners in the semi final is a decent performance."

GB Performance Pathway Coordinator Warwick Cann attended the tournament with the team and commented: "The main benefit of this tournament was that The England Under 16 Women's coaching staff were able to view players in international competition. This has definitely helped with selection of the final team for the Euros. It was a great opportunity for me to see all our emerging under 16 and under 15 women players in competition at the one time. It allowed me to make a good assessment of English playing standards against the French who are a leading federation. I was also able to observe our national teams coaches at close hand and help them with their development in preparation for the important European championship."

U16 WOMEN VICTORIOUS IN VIOLAINES - (13/05/2008)

The Under 16 Women squad went unbeaten in the Violaines tournament, finishing with a 64-41 victory over the Netherlands in the final to take home the trophy.

Head Coach Karen Burton provided the following report -

"The comments from everyone were fantastic regarding the teams attitude on and off the court. As the coach, I was very proud of how the girls performed. Great teamwork allowed the shooters to spot up and for their team mates to find them. Unselfish play by all the players meant our break was successful. Ella Clark and Jess Hurd made the tournament all star 5, but they would not have done so without their team mates work ethic.

There were two younger players, Claire Harper and Christina Gaskin, who contributed to the team. Christina with her amazing work ethic who never stops running and Clare with some big boxing out and confident passes. Our guards were controlled and led the team from the back court and with some fantastic pressure defence bothered all of their opponents. Our forwards with some excellent attacking drives to the baskets picked up some great scores.

The pleasing thing for me was that our free throw shooting has improved and we were much more consistent.

We have a great platform now and with hard work in the next three months leading up to the tournament we are looking for bigger and better things than last year."
