U18 MEN SQUAD OF 19 NAMED - (01/03/2011)
Coach Steve Bucknall has named a 19 player squad after their recent camp.
Coach Bucknall commented: "The camp provided the coaching staff with another opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the players available. It also gave the players a chance to understand our coaching philosophies and team tactics. Overall the players all showed the right attitude at each session and as a group they noted that effort and teamwork will be required as a minimum by every squad member. The team components are the building blocks from which our preparation for the European championships will begin. Lastly, we the coaching staff are continuing to build the foundations of a team and therefore we are still evaluating players within our squad for the final selection in July 2011."

U18 MEN FINISH 6TH AT EUROPEANS - (02/08/2010)
The U18 Men won 5 and lost 3 in the recently completed European Championship to finish in 6th position.
Their opening day loss to hosts Israel (who finished 4th) proved crucial as they carried this through to the second stage where a loss to Montenegro meant they missed out on the semi-finals despite wins against Denmark, Romania, Belarus and Estonia. A win against Bosnia & Herzegovina meant the worse they could finish was 6th, but they were unable to clinch 5th as their second match-up with Estonia ended in a defeat.
Devon Van Oostrum top-scored for the team with 14.3 points per game, including 35 in the first Estonia game. He was also second in the tournament in assists with 5.1 per game, whilst also averaging over 6 rebounds per game and 2 steals per game. Joshua Owen-Thomas averaged 11.1 points per game and shot over 45% on his 35 three-point attempts.

U18 MEN FINISH 5TH AT FUTURE STARS - (12/07/2010)
England's Under 18 Men finished fifth in the Future Stars tournament at Kingston over the weekend, winning one of their four games.
In the group stage on Friday, 13 points apiece from Josh Owen-Thomas and Louis Sayers couldn't prevent a 77-68 loss against Poland in their opening game, and after a two hour break, England then went down 73-58 against Croatia.
Against Poland, a poor start saw coach Tim Lascelles' team trail 17-11 at the first break, but they had a strong second period as they outscored the Division A team 31-22 to lead 42-39 going into the locker room at half-time.
The Poles regained the initiative as a 17-11 third period saw them carry a five point lead into the final break and they wrapped up the victory with a 21-17 fourth stanza.
Devon van Oostrum finished with 11 points, while Aaron Geramipoor added nine for England.
With Croatia - another Division A team - coming into the game fresh, it was always going to be an uphill battle for England, but they started well and went into the first break with a 15-12 lead.
That was as good as it got, though, as the Croats took control to lead 36-30 at half-time and eventually ran out comfortably winners.
Geramipoor led the England scoring with 14, with van Oostrum adding ten and Jesse Chuku nine.
Saturday saw a comfortable 89-59 victory against hosts Richmond Select in the first leg of the fifth-place playoff.
England never looked back after a 26-8 first period, which saw 13 points from Sheffield Sharks' John Stewart. England's offence stagnated in the second quarter, and Richmond chipped away at their lead, cutting the deficit to 35-25 with four minutes left in the half, but an England surge meant they went into the break up 45-26.
Improved ball movement in the third quarter saw England take charge of the game, and van Oostrum hit a contested buzzer-beating three-pointer sending them into the final break with a 64-39 lead.
The game became stretched in the fourth quarter as both teams got easy buckets on the break, but the result was never in doubt.
Stewart led all scorers with 22 points, while Jesse Chuku added 13 for England. Gilchrist led Richmond with 14.
With fifth place effectively sealed, England could afford a 82-68 loss to Richmond in Sunday's fifth-place play-off second leg. Richmond scored the first nine points of the game as they led from tip to buzzer, going into the first break trailing 21-7.
It wasn't until the impressive Josh Johnson took a breather that England were able to make inroads into Richmond's lead, and an off-balance banked three at the buzzer from Owen-Thomas made it 39-36 at half-time.
Richmond came out strong to start the second half and soon had their lead back to double figures, and as England became frustrated Rob Loftman was ejected for arguing a call and van Oostrum picked up two technical fouls as Richmond wrapped up the win.
Stewart led England with 16 with van Oostrum adding 13 and Jesse Chuku nine. Johnson's 19 led Richmond while Gilchrist chipped in with 17.
Elsewhere in the tournament, France beat Sweden 90-63 to seal third place, while Croatia were crowned champions with a 70-67 win over Poland.

IRELAND TRIP RESULTS IN SPLIT SERIES - (27/05/2008)
The following report is from Bob Chappell the team manager -
"The England U18 basketball team travelled to Ireland to play two matches with a development squad in order to give some up and coming players experience of international competition. When playing Ireland you can be sure that their tenacious defence, great shooting and ability to succeed on the foul-line outweighs their kind hospitality, and so it proved to be. In the first game, Ireland overcome a 5 point deficit with 3 minutes of the game remaining to win 57-55. For England Ryan Richards and Andrew Lawrence top-scored with 8 points each. But more importantly coach Andre Alleyne gained insights into the ability and disposition of the new players. In the second game, England raced to a 20-7 first quarter lead, and maintained a healthy lead throughout the game. Newcomer Will Neighbour top-scored with 16 points, Jamie Glen had 13, Andrew Lawrence 10 and Shamar Marston 8."

CHERBOURG TOURNAMENT REPORT - (25/03/2008)
The following report is from Bob Chappell the team manager -
"Cancellation of the ferry crossing due to impending bad weather 24 hours before the England U18 team were due to depart for the annual international tournament in Cherbourg did not detract from their performance. In fact, the change in travel arrangements helped build team spirit as players changed their travel plans from France, Germany, the Canary Islands, the US and England, to arrive 12 hours earlier. The earlier arrival enabled the team to train three times in preparation for their group games versus Tunisia, Cherbourg and Romania. Head coach, Andre Alleyne, was able to conduct excellent coaching sessions to cater for most eventualities. These sessions brought immediate dividends as England beat the athletic Tunisia 81-61 with Jack Stannard and Bradley Wilkinson top scoring with 18 points each.
Cherbourg, the host club, provided a spirited early encounter, but eventually succumbed to the fast breaking England team - this was reflected in Andrew Lawrence, a guard, being the top scorer with 18 points. A tough encounter was expected from Romania, but they were beaten comfortably to ensure that England won their pool, and played Holland, the second placed team from Pool B in the semi-final. In a tight game in which Bradley Wilkinson excelled again, England won, reaching the final for the first time.
The final against Portugal was a close and tense encounter. Portugal raced to an early 13-4 lead, but a time-out by Andre Alleyne change the ‘mind-set’ of the players, who battled back to lead 34-25 at half time. Crucial 3 point shots from Josh Houghton and Jack Stannard, rebounds from Jeff Durkin, and tenacious defence from Andrew Wallace ensured a 67-58 win by England, much to the delight of the travelling England supporters. The second half belonged to Jamie Glen whose points and rebounds performed with an unconventional but effective style resulted in him being awarded the game’s MVP."

The road to the 2007 European Championships is slowly drawing to a close as the summer approaches and England's Under 18 Men have recently returned from a tournament in Cherbourg as part of the preparations.
England did lose 3 of their 4 games, but head coach Tim Lewis admits that objectives were achieved such as being able to observe potential national team players in a competitive European situation, add players to the current final roster, and it gave all players the opportunity to identify areas of improvement and development after exposure to this level of competition.
Lewis is still looking at potential candidates to fill that final 12-man roster at the Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria from 3-12 August 2007. The 12 candidates he chose to attend the Cherbourg tournament, their scoring totals, and the final results from this competition are included below.
