England Basketball is commited to the principles of equality and equal opportunities. Work is now underway to ensure that the governing body meets the Equality Standard: a framework for sport published by the home country and UK Sports Council’s in October 2004. England Basketball has successfully achieved the Preliminary Level of the Equality Standard.
In 2000 England Basketball received recognition from Sport England and Sporting Equals for meeting the Preliminary Standard in ‘Achieving Racial Equality in Sport’. England Basketball are determined to ensure that the sport is totally inclusive, seeking to break down barriers that may have prevented under represented groups and individuals becoming involved in the sport.
“England Basketball and Sport England, in conjunction with our equity partners are striving to ensure that our sport is inclusive. I have no doubt that the Equality Standard framework will help our sport increase its numbers of participants over the coming years. It is vital that no one in our sport whether an employee, member or volunteer is allowed to suffer from discrimination on the grounds of gender, marital status, race, colour, disability, sexuality, age, occupation, religion or political opinion". (Keith Mair, England Basketball Chief Executive)
