What's The Call?

Clip 11: Free Throw Violation

In this play the referees are administering one free throw after #6 black scored a basket and was fouled in the process.

Learning points
  • All players are correctly positioned around the key and three point areas when the lead referee bounces the ball to the free throw shooter
  • Whilst the ball is in the possession of the shooter, #13 black runs from outside the three point area and takes a position around the key area. This is a violation
  • The centre referee alerts the shooter to pass the ball back to the lead referee in order to begin the process again
  • The free throw should not have been interrupted at this point and play should have continued with #6 black attempting the free throw
  • If the basket is successful then the game will continue as normal
  • If the free throw misses then the centre referee should blow their whistle to stop the game because of the violation of #13 black. The red team would then be awarded the ball for a throw in at the free throw line extended
  • If a player from the defending team was to take a position in this manner whilst the ball was in the disposal of the free throw shooter and the basket misses then another free throw would be awarded
  • This is the same as when a player steps into the key area before the free throw shooter releases the ball
