Starting A Club

If there are no basketball clubs in your area, it might make sense for you to try to start one, here are some simple steps that you may find helpful -
  1. Find an available basketball court and get a few friends down to play. To keep costs to a minimum try to negotiate a price for multiple weeks.

  2. Contact England Basketball about coaching qualifications. Ensure that whoever coaches the team is qualified to the minimum standards required.

  3. Contact England Basketball or your local registrar to affiliate the club and players to ensure the club and players have the appropriate Public Liability insurance.

For more affiliation details please go to the Affiliating Your Club section.

  4. Contact your local registrar to identify what teams are in the area and whether there is the opportunity for friendly and competitive games.

  5. Contact your Local Authority or County Sports Partnership to see if they can offer you any help in finding funding for kit, coaching, facilities and other equipment. For more information on County Sports Partnerships please contact your Regional Development Manager.

  6. Form a small organising committee with specific roles and responsibilities. Typical posts might include a Club Secretary, Coach and Treasurer.

Roles & Responsibilities information for these positions are available in the Club Development & Good Practice section.

  7. Set up a club bank account with at least two signatories.

  8. Market the club by creating as much publicity and exposure for your club as possible using posters, fliers, local newspapers, local radio. Send these to all you local Schools, Local Authority and other contacts. As a member of England Basketball you can register for a free club website.

  9. If your target market is juniors then find your nearest Schools, Colleges and Universities or preferably School Sports Partnership (SSP) to see if they offer basketball and would set up a formal Club-School link.

  10. For further club development contact your County Basketball Development Officer (if you have one) or your Regional Development Manager who may be able to point you in the right direction.
